Opioids

Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and many others such as the National Institute on Drug Abuse Opioids and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid drug that is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin. It is one of the most common drugs involved in most overdose deaths. It is often mixed into other drugs or pressed with Fentanyl in the creation of Counterfeit pills. Some of these drugs include:

  • OxyContin (Ox, Oxy, Percs, Roxy)
  • Xanax (Zannies, Bars, Benzos, Yellow School Bus)
  • Adderall
  • Heroin
  • MDMA (Molly, X, E)
  • Cocaine
  • Tylenol

Data collected from LA Dept of Health:

  • From 2019 to 2020, Louisiana experienced a 115% increase in synthetic opioid poisoning deaths
  • There were 678 synthetic opioid poisoning deaths in 2020
  • Louisiana was ranked 5th nationally in drug overdoses by state
